Mackinac City is constantly buzzing, with it’s event season starting at the end of May. Bicyclists come from all corners for the Zoo-de-Mack, a 51 mile bike ride through the rustic beauty of Michigan, ending with a ferry ride to Mackinac Island. The Island itself is worth a visit; Historic homes line the streets and the only transportation available is walking, biking, or by horse!
Other events include the annual Lilac Festival,, the St.Ignace Car Festival, or the Fright Fort in October. Each is packed with sights, but if you can’t make it have no fear! There is plenty else to occupy your time, whatever your tastes be: historical or sunset bridge tours, countless lighthouses, and beautiful parks abound. If the family is looking for adventure, check out the Jack Pine Lumberjack show or head over to The Historic Mill Park Discovery Center. They have ziplining, rock-climbing, a forest canopy bridge and 3 miles of winding trails. Plus, it’s educational! Costumed actors deliver talks and demos about the sawmill and its history.
History plays an integral role in Mackinaw and Colonial Michilimackinac is a prime example! This historic British fort is a time machine back to the 18th century; costumed actors roam the reconstructed fur-trading village, performing musket and cannon firings and demonstrating hearth cooking and crafts. Historical homes, buildings and other exhibits have been accurately recreated and are open to explore. Archaeological digs are still occurring at the fort, and you can witness history being uncovered as archaeologists onsite discover new artifacts constantly. If you are around for Memorial Day, get ready. Over 400 actors come to the fort to recreate the events that occurred between Indian Tribes, the French, and the British. This free event includes meeting historical chiefs and colonial figures, battle reenactments, a parade and fireworks.
If you’re ready to hit the water, the options become even more numerous. Try your hand at parasailing or get out the watercraft and race around the waters of Lake Michigan.
